Community Involvement

True to the ideal of Henry Boney, Sprouts is actively involved in the communities in which we operate, and supports many local non-profit and educational institutions that share our goal of improved health, nutrition and fitness. This involvement takes many forms.

Major Support

At the corporate level, Sprouts has provided major support to certain causes with which we are closely aligned.

Autism Speaks Walk 2011In both 2010 and 2011, we helped raise money for autism research through a multifaceted program with Autism Speaks and the Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center. This is a cause near and dear to the heart of Sprouts President Doug Sanders, who has a child who has been diagnosed with autism. In 2011, we raised more than $1 million through the kind generosity of our customers (who made donations at the cash register) and business partners.

Sprouts has also adopted the Grab & Give campaign pioneered by Henry's, which encourages customers to buy bags of groceries at a discount and then allow us to donate them to food banks in the markets in which we operate.

In the past, Sprouts has undertaken other innovative corporate fundraising initiates, including the Stand Up for State Parks campaign in 2009, which helped raise funds to replace the budget cuts made to state park funding in Arizona, California, Colorado and Texas.

Donations

Our donation goal is to contribute to the quality of healthy families, healthy children and healthy environments through in-kind support. The vast majority of donations are made at store level, in the form of food donations or gift cards, to qualifying organizations that are aligned with our goals. Examples include donations of bananas or water for fundraising road races; donations of reusable bags for health fairs and green festivals; and donations of gift cards to be used as raffle items or to provide catering for a fundraising event.

Donation Request Guidelines

  • We do not give cash; donations are usually in the form of food or gift cards
  • We do not sponsor events
  • All recipients must be qualified non-profit or educational institutions, and must supply a Federal 501(c)(3) form with their donation request
  • Requests must be received by the first of the month PRIOR TO the month the donation is needed: for example, requests for donations to be made in March must be received by February 1
  • Because we receive far more requests than we can honor, priority is given to qualifying organizations located in the immediate communities we serve, in the fields of nutrition education and research; health; fitness; environmental awareness; and food-related causes that address hunger or promote a healthy lifestyle
  • We strive to maintain an even-handedness in our philanthropy and do not donate to causes that are overtly political or controversial
  • We generally do not support national charities that have multiple other avenues for fundraising
  • We attempt to spread our impact by not donating to the same organization too frequently.
